Quick answer

If your business has tax debt, a current statement from ATO online services is one of the most useful documents to prepare overnight. It shows what's owed, what's overdue and any payment plan in place. ATO online services are generally available outside business hours, apart from planned maintenance. ATO debt is considered case by case, and an up-to-date statement lets a specialist see the full picture on the first call.

Key points

  • ATO debt is considered case by case — it doesn't automatically rule you out.
  • A current ATO statement shows the real balance, not what you think it is.
  • ATO online services can usually be accessed at night, outside maintenance windows.
  • Include any letters or notices, photographed, with their dates visible.

Considered case by case

Tax debt is one of the most common reasons business owners look for finance, and one of the most common things they’re nervous about mentioning. You don’t need to be. ATO debt is considered case by case, and the single best thing you can do to make that assessment smooth is to have a current, accurate picture of what’s owed. You can usually get that tonight.

Why does a lender want to see your ATO statement?

Because tax debt affects both the risk and the purpose of the loan. A specialist needs to know:

  • How much is owed, broken down by account (activity statement, income tax and so on).
  • How much is overdue, and for how long.
  • Whether there’s a payment plan, and whether it’s being kept up.
  • Whether any notices have been issued, and what they require.

Owners often carry an approximate figure in their heads. The statement shows the real one, including penalties and interest charges that may have been added. Surprises on the first call slow things down; surprises halfway through an application slow them down more.

How do you get a statement after hours?

Through ATO online services. The ATO’s online services page is the hub for business access, and it links to its planned maintenance windows — worth checking if the system doesn’t respond late at night. Access for businesses uses Digital ID, such as myID, together with the Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM).

Once logged in, look for your account balances and statements, and save or print to PDF:

  1. The integrated client account or activity statement account balance and transactions.
  2. Any income tax account balance for the entity.
  3. Details of any payment plan, including the instalment amount and next due date.
What to saveWhy it helps

Transaction list for the last 6–12 monthsShows what’s been paid and what’s been added
Payment plan detailsShows whether it’s on track
Any letters or notices, photographedShows deadlines and requirements

What if you can’t log in tonight?

It happens — an expired Digital ID, access set up only for your accountant, or a maintenance window. In that case:

  • Note the approximate amount and what you believe it relates to.
  • Photograph any recent ATO letters, making sure the dates are visible.
  • Plan to ask your accountant or bookkeeper for a statement first thing.
  • Mention all of this in your enquiry. A specialist can start with an honest estimate.

Tax debt in the picture? Send your enquiry tonight and tell us about it up front. There’s no credit check when you first enquire.

How should you describe the tax debt in your enquiry?

Plainly. Something like:

“About $85k owed to the ATO across BAS and income tax. On a payment plan since March, two instalments missed during a slow winter. Looking to clear it and consolidate.”

That’s enough to start. It tells the specialist the size, the history and the goal, and it signals you’re being straight with them — which matters. Our guide to writing your loan purpose and exit shows how to put the repayment side just as simply.

What about BAS due dates in the meantime?

Keep an eye on them. The four quarterly BAS dates fall on the 28th of October, February, April and July, and under the ATO’s rule a BAS date that lands on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday rolls forward to the following business day for both lodging and paying. Lodging on time, even if you can’t pay in full, generally puts you in a better position than not lodging. Our guide to due dates that land on weekends covers the rules.

Does property security change things with ATO debt?

Often, yes. Where there’s equity in residential or commercial property, a property-secured loan from $20,000 to $5,000,000 can be used to clear tax debt, and the security generally gives lenders more comfort about the tax history. Without property, unsecured options for trading businesses are still considered, sized on turnover and bank statements, though the size and history of the debt matter more.

Either way, the specialist will want to understand why the debt built up. A one-off — a big job that paid late, an unexpected tax bill after a strong year — reads very differently from a pattern. Be ready to explain it in a sentence or two.

Illustrative example: the statement that changed the number

Illustrative example only.

A plumbing business owner in Canberra believes he owes the ATO around $40k. At 10.30pm he logs in to online services and downloads the statement. The real figure is closer to $52k once general interest charges and a recent BAS are included, and a payment plan he thought was active had lapsed.

He puts the accurate number and the lapsed plan in his enquiry. The morning call is about clearing the full amount using equity in his home, rather than discovering the gap two days into an application.

Face the number tonight, fix it tomorrow

Logging in to the ATO portal late at night isn’t anyone’s idea of fun. But a real number, written down honestly, turns tax debt from a shadow into a problem with a size and a solution.

The whole form is about a minute. Sending it triggers no credit check, your situation is never shopped around to a pile of lenders, and someone who handles tax debt regularly reads it and picks up the phone. Please be accurate about the amount and any plan — it’s how we match you with the right lender the first time. See if you qualify with tax debt.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a business loan with ATO debt?

Often, yes. ATO debt is considered case by case, and property security usually widens the options. Be upfront about the amount and any payment plan so you're matched to a lender comfortable with it.

How do I log in to ATO online services at night?

The same way as during the day. The ATO's online services use Digital ID, such as myID, together with Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM) for business access. The ATO publishes planned maintenance windows on its online services page.

What if my accountant manages everything with the ATO?

You can usually still log in yourself if you're set up in RAM. If not, note that your accountant holds the details and ask them for a statement first thing in the morning.

Should I set up a payment plan before applying?

It depends on the situation. Some owners use a loan to clear the debt entirely; others keep a plan in place. Talk it through with your accountant and your specialist before deciding.

What if I've received a notice rather than just a statement?

Photograph it, note the date and what it asks for, and mention it in your enquiry. Our page on ATO letters opened after hours explains the first steps.
