Quick answer
Easter creates the longest routine gap in the Australian banking calendar outside Christmas. The RBA's RITS system is closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday as well as the weekend, so property-secured loans can't settle from Friday to Monday. In 2027 that's Friday 26 to Monday 29 March. Enquiries still come through and are read on the Tuesday; use the four days for paperwork.
Key points
- Easter closes settlement for four days in a row: Friday to Monday.
- The Thursday before Good Friday is the last settlement day of the week.
- Easter 2027 runs from Friday 26 March to Monday 29 March.
- Four days is plenty of time to build a complete file at home.
- Good Friday 2027
- 26 March
- Easter Monday 2027
- 29 March
- Last business day before
- Thursday
- First business day after
- Tuesday
Easter is a strange time for business cash flow. Retail, hospitality and tourism are often flat out. Trades, professional services and B2B businesses go quiet. And the banking system takes four days off in a row. If you need funding around Easter, the calendar is the first thing to understand.
Why is Easter such a big gap for business funding?
Because two public holidays sit either side of a weekend. The Reserve Bank’s RITS system, which settles property-secured loans, is closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday as well as weekends (RBA). From the close of business on Thursday to the start of business on Tuesday, nothing property-related settles.
| Easter 2027 | What happens | |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday | 25 March | Last settlement day of the week |
| Good Friday | 26 March | Closed |
| Easter Saturday | 27 March | Closed (weekend; also a public holiday in NSW and Vic) |
| Easter Sunday | 28 March | Closed |
| Easter Monday | 29 March | Closed |
| Tuesday | 30 March | Settlements resume; enquiries picked up |
Dates are from the Fair Work Ombudsman’s 2027 public holiday list. In 2026, Easter ran from Good Friday 3 April to Easter Monday 6 April.
What’s the last realistic day before Easter?
The Thursday — and ideally not the Thursday afternoon. For a property-secured loan to settle before the break, the valuation, approval, loan documents and signatures all need to be in place in time for that day’s settlement activity. Working backwards, that usually means enquiring at least several business days before Easter.
For a smaller unsecured amount, where same-day funding is possible, the Thursday morning can still work if your statements and ID are ready to go.
Seeing an Easter problem coming? Start your enquiry now — the earlier it’s in, the more business days you have.
What should you do if you’re already inside Easter?
Use the four days. They’re the best preparation window of the year.
- Friday: send the enquiry with the exact amount, purpose and due date. Write down who’s affected.
- Saturday: download six months of statements for every business account, and export a profit and loss.
- Sunday: if property is involved, find the rates notice and latest loan statements; check who’s on the title.
- Monday: write the repayment plan in three lines, text any co-owners or co-directors, and draft a short update for anyone you owe.
On Tuesday morning, your file is complete and waiting. The overnight preparation hub explains each document, and our guide to writing the loan purpose and exit keeps that part short.
Which businesses feel Easter most?
It depends which side of the holiday you’re on.
- Busy over Easter: cafés, restaurants, accommodation, tourism operators, garden centres and retailers often need extra stock and staff before the break, and pay public holiday rates during it. The pressure is upfront.
- Quiet over Easter: builders, manufacturers, wholesalers and professional firms lose trading days while fixed costs carry on. The pressure shows up the week after, when receipts are slow.
- Both: anyone relying on customer payments that were due on Good Friday, which will arrive on the Tuesday at the earliest.
What should you tell staff and suppliers before Easter?
A little communication before the break saves a lot of anxious messages during it.
- Staff: confirm who’s working which days, and that public holiday pay will be included in the next pay run. If payday itself lands on Good Friday or Easter Monday, tell your team when the pay will actually arrive — usually the last business day before, if your bank needs the file early, or the Tuesday after if you’re relying on incoming funds.
- Suppliers: check who’s closing and for how long. If you need a delivery after Easter, confirm whether they want payment before they close, and plan for it.
- Customers who owe you: a friendly reminder before Easter can bring a payment forward into the Thursday rather than letting it drift to the following week.
- Your bookkeeper or accountant: ask for anything you’ll need from them — a profit and loss, the latest BAS — before they head off.
If any of those conversations reveals a gap, that’s your cue to enquire before the Thursday rather than during the break.
Can any money move over Easter?
Money you already have, yes. The New Payments Platform runs every day of the year, so a fast transfer to a supplier on Easter Saturday may go through, subject to your bank’s checks. New loan funds won’t be released until the Tuesday, and BPAY payments made during the break are processed on the next banking business day. Our BPAY on weekends and holidays page explains the timing.
Illustrative example: a pre-Easter stock order
Illustrative example only; no real business is described.
A family-owned bakery in Hobart needs extra flour, packaging and casual staff for its busiest week of the year. Two weeks before Easter the owner enquires, noting the amount and that she owns the building the bakery trades from. Because she enquired early, there’s time for a valuation and signing, and the loan settles on the Tuesday before Easter. The rush goes ahead with stock on the shelves, and the loan is repaid from the takings over the following months.
Treat Easter as a head start
Easter can’t be moved. What you can control is whether the four closed days are spent worrying or preparing.
When you’re ready, the enquiry is a sixty-second job. Asking involves no credit check, your enquiry isn’t farmed out to other lenders over the long weekend, and a real person picks it up on the Tuesday and calls you. Please answer accurately — amount, purpose, state and any property — so the first call can point you to the right option. See if you qualify this Easter.
Frequently asked questions
Can a business loan settle over Easter?
Not a property-secured one. RITS is closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday as well as the weekend, so settlement can't happen between Thursday and Tuesday.
When should I enquire if I need money before Easter?
At least several business days before the Thursday, especially for anything property-secured. That leaves room for a valuation, signatures and settlement before the break.
Is Easter Saturday a public holiday?
In NSW and Victoria, yes — Fair Work lists Easter Saturday in NSW and the Saturday before Easter Sunday in Victoria. For settlement purposes it's a weekend day anyway, so RITS is closed.
What can I do over Easter to speed things up?
Send the enquiry, then gather statements, ID, property papers and a short purpose and repayment plan. On Tuesday morning your file is ready to move.
Do customer payments slow down around Easter?
Often, because accounts teams take leave and payments made on the holidays wait for a business day. Allow for receipts landing later than usual in the week after Easter.
